A Martial Arts program exclusively for those who serve Henrico County

This program is exclusively for the following:

  • Division of Police
  • Division of Fire
  • Sheriff's Office
  • Emergency Communications
  • Security Professionals in Henrico County

Existing students of the Seirin Dojo may also attend the program, in addition to military personnel.

Program Overview

Learn an effective form of Martial Arts that is not based on modern sport, tournaments, trophies or gloating ranks and titles. This program emphasizes traditional training for real life situations, and includes forms of specialized methods and techniques specifically for the firefighting professional. The following topics are covered as part of the Taijutsu method of unarmed study:

  • Taihenjutsu - This form of study includes a variety of skills related to controlling distance between an adversary, methods of evasion, forms of falling and rolling, leaping methods, and avoiding injury and facilitating escape.
  • Dakentaijutsu - This is a specialized method of striking utilizing all parts of the body as weapons to strike down an opponent (and not merely hit "at" them). Two forms of striking discplines are studied: "Koshijutsu" utilizes specialized fists to strike into the weak parts of the body, such as nerve centers and specialized points. "Koppojutsu" focuses on striking the structure of an opponent, such as bones and joints. The combination of both striking discplines creates a comprehensive striking method that is adaptive and effective.
  • Jutaijutsu - This form of study includes joint locks and manipulation, methods of pinning and control, escapes, defense from holds and chokes, methods of throwing an opponent, and other elements of Jujutsu (standing, kneeling and ground grappling).

Instruction is based on a non-strength based method that utilizes striking, locking, grappling, pinning and other methods in a self-defense environment. The training is hands-on, and students are trained in a variety of ranges and methods so that a specialty is not developed. This enables the individual to effectively defend themselves against a variety of fighting styles and abilities, in a constantly changing environment. Plus it's a great workout!

The study also includes armed methods of self-defense, including traditional and modern weaponry. The following weapons are part of the study:

  • 6 foot/4 foot/3 foot staff
  • Japanese sword (Katana and Kodachi)
  • Knife
  • Projectile weapons (knife, dirk, and disc)
  • Halberds (Yari and Naginata)
